Krakow's Cloth Hall

Presented to be the oldest shopping mall in the entire world and a centre of international trade, the Cloth Hall in Krakow is positioned in the Grand Square for more than 700 years now and is still operating. The market was a meeting place for the traveling merchants, who came here to barter and to discuss business matters.

Approximately in year 1300 two rows of trade stalls were covered with a roof to form the Sukiennice building or the so known today - the Cloth Hall, where used to be organized trade with textile. Later, after the middle of the fourteenth century, that structure was extended into an eight-meter wide and one-hundred and eight meter long structure.

In the Golden Age period during the fifteenth century, at the Cloth Hall market could be found various exotic goods brought there from the East like silk and leather, spices and wax.

In year 1555 a fast-spreading fire destroyed some of the Cloth Hall and it had to be reconstructed. After the restoration, the Cloth Hall came with a Renaissance architecture and an ornate roof featuring some grotesque masks done by the artist Santi Gucci. At that time emerged the galleries and the picturesque stairs located on both ends of the building. Two centuries later, in the period 1875 - 1879 were refurbished the arcades outside and were added the central transepts.

Today the Cloth Hall is operating still and is seen as one of the symbols of Krakow. On the stalls located on the main floor and in the shops set in the arcades it sells various souvenirs. On the second floor since the decade of the 1880s is exhibited a collection of Polish art dating from the nineteenth century, which used to be exhibited first in the Krakow National Museum.

The Cloth Hall welcomes visitors in two large cafes. One of them, known as the Noworolski's café, is existing since year 1910 and provides an elegant deco in an Art Nouveau style.

The Sukiennice area as it is known the Cloth Hall by the locals has welcomed numerous important guests over the centuries of the Polish glory, including monarchs and politicians, as well as artists. In the past, after the country's liberation from Austria by Prince Jezef Poniatowski, in the Cloth Hall were organized luxurious balls. In recent days, the Cloth Hall was visited by Prince Charles from Great Britain and Emperor Akihito from Japan.

Besides a cultural site and a place with great history, the Cloth Hall is still an important trade centre, selling numerous souvenirs for the travelers who want to have something from Krakow. Of course, similar trade centers are available in other cities of Poland and in the cities of Leeds in England and Ypres in Belgium. However, the most widely-known and excellently preserved one is the Cloth Hall in Krakow.
