Krakow's Wawel Cathedral

Positioned inside the Wawel Castle in Krakow, the Wawel Cathedral dates back to the fourteenth century and serves as the spiritual centre of Poland. It is also the burial place for almost all Polish national heroes and kings.

An interesting fact for the travelers would be that the Wawel Cathedral used to be the cathedral of Pope John Paul II, right before he was chosen to go to the Vatican.

Both the Wawel Cathedral and the Castle that bears the same name are set on the Wawel Hill, which is a fifteen-acre vast rocky limestone, located on the bank of Vistula River and dominating the Old Town of Krakow. Actually, the hill is a natural fortification area, as the Vistula Plain is rather flat.

The history of the Wawel Hill as we know it today, started during the eight century, when there was formed a stronghold and two centuries later the places hosted a royal residence and the bishops' seat. From year 1037 onwards when Krakow became the capital of Poland, all Polish kings were crowned and later buried in the Wawel Cathedral, which is part of the Wawel Hill.

The Wawel Cathedral is numerated as the third one to be build on the site. Its construction started in year 1320 and was completed in year 1364. It has austere structure, baroque and Renaissance elements. It is in the Wawel Cathedral that Father Karol Wojtyla, who was later became recognized as Pope John Paul II, performed his first Mass.

Less than twenty years after 1946 when this happened; he became an Archbishop of Krakow and later the leader of the Roman Catholic church. The Wawel Cathedral has plenty of things to offer to every tourist, starting with its eighteen chapels, all beautifully painted, especially the Sigismund Chapel. Thanks to its golden dome, sculptures, paintings and stuccos, this chapel is thought to be the best Renaissance chapel to the north side of the Alps mountain range. Here worked painters lile Santi Gucci, Berecci and Georg Pensc, as well as Hermann Vischer.

In this chapel could also be found the tombs of King Sigismund and the one of King Sigismund II Augustus, as well as the tomb of Anna Jagiellonka. The tomb of King Kazimierz the Great is placed to the altar's right side and is made of red marble. Actually, in the Wawel Cathedral could be seen the tombs of all but four of the forty-five royal rulers of Poland, set in the side chapels and in the Saint Leonard's Crypt. On the nave of the Wawel Cathedral is situated the mausoleum of the patron saint of Poland, Saint Stanislav. He used to be a bishop of Krakow during the eleventh century when he was murdered by King Boleslav II.

Today, the silver coffin of the saint is made of twelve relief scenes from his life and the numerous miracles he made after his death. In the Wawel Cathedral are positioned also one museum and one library, as well as a treasury and archives. Here is also situated the Sigismund Tower with its Bell, which is reached with the help of a wooden staircase and the sacristy. The great bell was commissioned by King Sigismund the OId back in year 1520 and is older than Big Ben bell in London with 350 years. Today the bell is tolled only on church and solemn state occasions.
