Krakow's Town Hall Tower
The Tower of the Town Hall in Krakow is among the main landmarks visited and photographed by the tourists. It is proudly positioned on the western side of the Main Market Square, which is part of the Old Town district. It is interesting fact to know that the tower is actually the only part of the original Town Hall, which was demolished in year 1820. This was done in order to arrange a large main square, which is a favorite meeting place for many local people in Krakow and the numerous tourists.The old Town Hall used to house the city prison in its cellars and a torture chamber from the Medieval times. The Town Hall Tower, which has a Gothic architecture was constructed at the end of the 13th century and was built of stone and brick. The tower is seventy meters tall and on its top floor it has an observation terrace, which is open for visitors who wish to enjoy a look at the city of Krakow from above.
Tourists should know though, that the tower should be climbed on its hundred narrow and very steep stairs and that there is no elevator. Once up, however, they will enjoy a great panoramic vista. The tower leans fifty-five centimeters, which is a result of a heavy wind storm in year 1703.
The Gothic hamlet that came with the tower was destroyed by a lightening and fire in year 1680 and in the next few years the tower underwent a reconstruction. The royal architect at that time, Piotr Beber designed a new Baroque helmet, which lasted until year 1783, when it began to crumble and was then replaced by a hamlet with a smaller structure.
The last restoration of the Town Hall Tower happened during the 1960's, when a pair of lions was placed on the front stairs. The Tower entrance is guarded by these two lions carved of stone, which were brought to Krakow by the Morstin family from the Classicist palace. The Tower is entered through its original portal, again made in gothic style and featuring the coat-of-arms of Krakow plus the emblem of Poland. The basement area below the Tower is used for stage performances by a cafeteria and the Ludowy Teatr, after its renovation.
The place further serves as part of the Krakow's Historical Museum and as such is enjoying a permanent display of the Market Square Exhibition. The Town Hall Tower is a great place to visit while in Krakow and to make photos. It is always full of tourists who enjoy buying souvenirs and cards depicting the tower.
