Krakow's Great Barbican

The tower Great Barbican was built at the very final years of the thirteenth century and the beginning of the fourteenth century and today is one of the must-see places and among the top visited tourist sights in Krakow. During the sixteenth century, the tower used to be one of the most mightful barbicans on this continent.

It served as an important part of a powerful defensive structure which protected the main city gate of Krakow, Brama Florianska. The tower features an image of its patron Saint Florian, located above the main entrance. It has circular marvel and is approximately twenty-five meters in diameter, while the walls are three meters thick.

The structure has seven turrets at the top and as many as one-hundred-and-thirty loopholes divided into four rows, the lower ones made to serve the artillery and the upper ones to serve the riflemen and the archers. The Great Barbican was surrounded by a deep moat, which was thirty meters wide. Even if the troops managed to reach the castle door besides the moat, they would have been entrapped and then shot from all sides from the Great Barbican.

The Brama Florianska main gate and the barbican were connected by a drawbridge and a passage that was walled and protected. In the beginning of the next, nineteenth century the main fortified wall was brought down on purpose at it had been declining and was no longer needed.

The main wall was later replaced by the green park Planty which surrounds the Old Town and is wonderful for a long walk where the tourists can check the spots where the old towers once stood during the Middle Ages. Today the Great Barbican is more than five hundred years old and is often used for concerts, performances and theatres during the summer months.

The medieval fortification of Krakow Brama Florianska and the gate tower is open for visitors each day from 10.30h in the morning to 18h in the evening and the ticket costs six zlotys. The barbican and the castle are entered through the tower Baszta Pasamonikow from the eastern end of the historical complex. The tours include the parapet walk of the city walls remnants, a visit to the Great Barbican, a visit to the Gothic chapel set close to the Brama Florianska Gate and ends with a visit to the tower Brama Stolarska. On the old wall of the Florian Gate are usually displaced paintings by various artists, which makes it a great place to buy a nice present.
