Krakow's Skalka Sanctuary

Skalka Sanctuary on focus here is the oldest shrine in the beautiful Polish city of Krakow and the second holiest one after the Monastery of Jasna Gora. The Skalka Sanctuary is positioned only a short walk away down the bank of Vistula River and is very close to the famous landmark Wawel Royal Castle.

It has been found out by the archeologists that the first settlement on the Skalka hill was about 2000 BC. Positioned on a rocky area, the sanctuary was once a rotunda church known with the fact that the Polish king Boleslav II the Bold murdered the bishop of Krakow Stanislav on the steps of the church on celebration of the mass in year 1079. After that event, the king was exiled, while the bishop was worshiped as martyr as when he was alive he opposed the tyrannical monarch. Two centuries later, the bishop was canonized to become the patron saint of the country.

It is very interesting to be known that during the Middle Ages the influence of the saint was very important for the formation of the Polish nation, the forming of the political scene, the culture and the traditions.

An interesting fact is that on their coronation, the Polish kings had to come to the Skalka Sanctuary to ask forgiveness for the sins of the predecessors. On the holy site today is situated a beautiful Baroque church, which was constructed back in the middle of the eighteenth century but it still keeps three dark spots on the church wall which are believed to be from the blood of Saint Stanislav. Actually, this is the second biggest church of the baroque Krakow churches, which comes right after the St. Peter and Paul's church.

In the beginning of May each year is being celebrated the day of Saint Stanislav, and the Krakow bishops gather the Polish notables. During that important day the relics of the saint are carried out of the Skalka sanctuary to be brought to the Wawel Cathedral and shown to the crowds of people that have gathered. Actually, the relics of Saint Stanislav are being hold in the Wawel Cathedral, where it is placed in a beautiful mausoleum. Since 1880s, the Skalka Sanctuary became the official burial place for the distinguished people in Krakow and in Poland as a whole and in recent days could be seen the tombs of the writer Jozef Kraszewski, the painters Jacek Malczewski and Stanislaw Wyspianski, as well as the composer Karol Szymanowski and the Nobel Prize winner Czeslaw Milosz. The place is visited by tourists, during their trips to the Wawel Castle, located nearby.
